Big Joy Everywhere!
Dear Gorgeous,

Take a deep breath with us...

Well, we enjoyed taking a few days off over the holidays to celebrate victories and reflect on learnings.

Those include the amazing gratitude we have for the creative energy of our awesome financial supporters, and just as important, those who turn their friends on to the Big Joy website! We're also grateful for the unfolding complex story of James Broughton, our Big Joy Hero Parker Lindner (read below) and how it all inspires us to "follow our own weird"!  (Remember, weird comes from the Celtic meaning fate, or destiny!)

Much more news, inspirations, and reflections below!  Don't hesitate to contact us with ideas or questions.

Don't fall asleep at the wheel of fortune.

Don't exercise, dance.

Don't diet, chuckle.

Don't tell people what not to do.

What's in a man's head?!
From the journal of Broughton

We recently took a trip to Kent State University in Ohio to peruse the James Broughton archives and come up with some of James' own words to narrate the Big Joy film.   We thought you might enjoy the excerpt below.

And just now Beloved has called from Montreal
with love      with love in his voice      and saying
dearer than ever
He knew I was thinking of him      wanting him
He is always plugged in
I shd remember to remember my own intuitivities
the flash flash
I will write him [Joel] a letter of some sort
even tho I am always thinking that
I shd be writing something else
something IMportant
IMpressive      and IMMortal

Money and Success!
Sharing the joys of recent fundraising successes! Wow!

Around the Big Joy office you will hear us say, "Now we are on the fast track!"  Of course we are not all the way there yet, but we've had such huge fundraising successes lately it's hard not to sport an enormous grin.

We brought in $40,000 in Decemberalone thanks to both large and small donors, including our largest grant to date by an anonymous family foundation.

We're using this money to get our poetry videos (the creative spine of our film) underway.  We're chatting with animators such as the talented Canadian Michael Mann to help make this happen.  (He did the animated title cards for the Big Joy trailer!)

And even though we're far from finished yet, all this makes us even more excited to show you our end result.

Of course it's not all about the money... it's about the art.  But in our case right now, it takes one to make the other.  So we are so grateful to our many donors and we look forward to the next deluge of dollars that will help us bring our film to completion.

And we hope you will be a part of it!  If you'd like to dedicate some dollars to creating more Big Joy in the world-- go to our website and click DONATE!  We still need $280,000 to finish.
Big Joy Hero: Parker Lindner
Parker, Eric, and Stephen in New York
Parker at Katz's Delicatessen! (with director Eric Slade and producer Stephen Silha)

From assisting with lighting and arranging rooms for interviews, to directing us to one of New York's finest delicatessens, Parker Lindner was essential to success on our June, 2010 shoot in New York.  Not only did she help us by asking interviewees poignant questions we had missed, she also rearranged her schedule to give Big Joy a week of her time, flew there on her own dime, and helped us out in every way as a volunteer!  We are so grateful!

You will experience her handywork in some Big Joy interviews, including Jim Cory, Stavo Craft, Edward Field, David Del Tredici, and Robert Haller.  Here are some of her comments about her experience:

Why did you choose to crew for the Big Joy Project in New York?

I used to be a media producer.  I was recently looking back on how much I enjoyed it.  I thought it would be fun to help you out -- and that it would also put me back in touch with something that I used to do and love. Working with the Big Joy crew was great. It was like picking up a thread of my own life. I also got a big kick out of the individuals I met. The people we interviewed were so interesting.

What was your favorite part or the experience?

Well, one wonderful moment was when we were interviewing David Del Tredici, the composer.  He was wearing full leathers.  He was talking about setting one of James' poems to music and he broke into tears.  It is a love poem and you could see that he really loved the work, and he really loved the person, and it was just very real.

I also loved doing a Big Joy salon fundraising party (at Gilbert Parker's).  A lot of people are afraid of doing fundraising.  But I noticed it has a way of connecting people with similar interests that is really fun.  I saw old friends and met new friends there.

What do you like best about James and his work?

I love the freedom and creativity of his philosophy with that Zen twist.  I love the reminder of being in the moment -- and his playfulness.  "Follow your own weird," seems like follow your own bliss, and I love how he really promotes allowing your creativity to drive your actions and coming at things from a place of joy.  Just being reminded of this makes me feel good!

What inspires you about the Big Joy Project?

Well that the goal to take the Broughton ideals and philosophy and share it so that everyone can experience Big Joy.  It's sort of like evangelizingjoy, and that inspires me!

Can you share something inspiring you've done in the last month? I have a friend who does an amazing dinner on New Year's Eve every year.  He has dinner for 60 in his home.   This year's theme was "Masquerade," so all the food looked like something that it is not.  For instance, the appetizer looked like dessert, the dessert looked like cheeseburger and fries.  There was a course called, "Release your inner artist" where each table got a set of pallets and paint tubes that were actually food spreads.  They got to paint their own meal!

It takes a lot of creativity--preparing and decorating.  Along with others, I help him plan and create it.  It is such a creatively inspiring thing to participate in!
